Labelident label rolls: Which materials are available?
Deciding what you need if you want to print labels yourself starts with the printing process of your label printer. Before selecting your consumables, ask yourself whether you want to print your label rolls using direct thermal printing, thermal transfer printing or inkjet printing!
Direct thermal labels
Adhesive labels on a roll for direct thermal printing are available as uncoated thermal eco labels and thermal top labels (with additional surface coating) or as direct thermal polypropylene labels. The bisphenol-free labels on a roll are particularly cost-effective and can be labeled without an extra ribbon. You need a direct thermal printer to print the special thermal labels. This discolors the thermosensitive label material solely through the heat of the print head. The direct thermal labels are primarily suitable for labels with low durability requirements, for example as shipping labels or address labels.
Tip: One of the best-known direct thermal printers on the market is the Zebra ZD421d (successor to the Zebra GK420d). It is characterized by its durability and reliability. You can also find suitable Labels for Zebra ZD421d in our store!
Thermal transfer labels
In contrast to direct thermal labels, an additional ribbon is required when printing thermal transfer labels. Depending on the intended use, you should choose a suitable combination of label material and ribbon. Paper labels, added to a wax-, resin-, wax/resin- or resin ultra ribbon, ensure solid labeling. However, they are not as resistant as film labels. Depending on the material, film labels are resistant to external influences such as moisture, chemicals or UV radiation to varying degrees. For smudge and scratch-resistant printing results, you should print with resin ribbons.
Inkjet labels
Inkjet labels are made of a high-gloss paper material and are a comparatively cost-effective option for high-quality, color label printing using the inkjet process. The coated paper material can be printed with water-based and pigmented inkjet inks in photorealistic quality and, thanks to the high-gloss surface, brings out the best in color gradients and color transitions. Use the high-gloss labels, for example, for product labeling in the food and cosmetics sector, as bottle labels, for canned goods or similar.
Labelident offers numerous label formats and sizes, printed or blank labels on a roll, for a wide range of possible applications. For example, you will find barcode labels, address labels, shipping labels, adhesive dots, laboratory and medical labels, labels for Auto-ID applications, component labeling and more. Special, brand-compatible labels are also available - for example Zebra labels for Zebra printers. Convince yourself of the variety and quality of our labels on roll from our in-house production!
Are there differences in label adhesives?
Roll labels are manufactured in different adhesive variants, from strongly adhesive to removable. Permanently adhesive labels on rolls are used particularly frequently. In general, labels only adhere 100% reliably if the adhesive is in full contact with the surface to be labeled. Choose an adhesive version that suits your labeling project and the surface to be affixed:
Labels for permanent bonding cannot be removed from the substrate without leaving residue or harm.
Labels suitable for uneven, textured surfaces or extreme temperatures for permanent bonding.
Removable labels can be removed from the substrate without leaving any residue or harm.

How do I find the right label printer for my label roll?
When selecting the right label printer for a specific self-adhesive label roll, the roll core is the most important factor. It indicates the inner diameter of the label roll. An incompatible roll core means that the roll cannot be placed correctly on the label printer holder. In addition, it is important to check the maximum roll width that the printer can process to ensure that the respective label roll is not too wide for the printer slot. Finally, the maximum roll outer diameter indicates the maximum size the roll can be to fit into the label printer. If you pay attention to these features, you can ensure that the adhesive label roll fits and that you can print efficiently and without problems. Tip: Is a label roll too large for your label printer? You can upgrade it using practical label rewinders and unwinders so that it can process larger roll diameters with ease.Which roll cores are available and which label printers are compatible?
Roll cores play a decisive role in the field of labeling. The size can be used to determine whether roll labels and label printers are compatible.
The roll core with a diameter of 0.75 inches (19 mm) is ideal for mobile printers, which are often used in the logistics sector and in wholesale or retail to print labels on the go.
For mini desktop printers that are often used in small offices or retail environments, the 1 inch (25.4 mm) roll core is the best choice. It offers a good balance between size and capacity for regular roll label printing.
Industrial printers designed for high volume printing and high volume label production typically use the 3 inch (76.2 mm) roll core. These label printers are often used in warehouse and production environments where efficiency and durability are required.
The 1.57 inch (40 mm) roll core is a great fit for mid-range printers, which bridge the gap between desktop and industrial printers by offering higher print capacity and speed than desktop models, but are not as robust and heavy as industrial printers.
Finally, labels on roll with a 6 inch (152.4 mm) roll core are designed for print & apply systems used in automated production lines to apply labels directly to products or packaging. These large roll cores maximize run time between roll changes, which is critical for production efficiency.
How are label rolls used?
A label roll is used in numerous industries and is suitable for various applications, which underlines its versatility and functionality.
Adhesive labels on rolls for shipping are essential for smooth processes in e-commerce and logistics, as they carry important information such as addresses and tracking codes.
Jewelry labels are used in the pricing of jewelry and eyewear.
Scale labels are used in supermarkets and by other retailers to indicate weights and prices directly on products.
Deep-freeze labels can be applied at temperatures as low as -10 °C and are ideal for labeling foodstuffs. They also have a high grip and are therefore ideal for use with high-speed dispensing systems.
Nameplate labels carry important information such as manufacturer data, serial numbers or technical specifications and can often be found on electronic devices or machines.
Heat-resistant labels can also withstand high temperatures, making them ideal for products that are exposed to heat during production, storage or transportation.
These examples illustrate just a fraction of the many possible uses of the label roll. Depending on requirements, they vary in size, shape, material and adhesive and can therefore also meet very specific requirements.
Is it possible to test the roll labels in advance?
